Motorcycle insurance in Washington & Florida

Ride covered on I-90 or A1A. Compare liability, collision, and custom-parts coverage for your bike across multiple carriers — with the seasonal and safety discounts most riders miss.

Motorcycle insurance is legally required to register and ride a street-legal bike in both Washington and Florida, but the two states approach it very differently — and the standard policy an agent quotes you often leaves your most expensive parts uncovered. As an independent agency, Maru compares motorcycle quotes from carriers that actually specialize in bikes, so a sport-tourer in Spokane, a cruiser in Tampa, and a track-day machine all get rated fairly instead of lumped in with car policies.

Quick take: Washington requires liability insurance to register a motorcycle (25/50/10 minimums). Florida is the outlier — it does not mandate bodily-injury liability for motorcycles, but riders who skip coverage must prove financial responsibility and are personally exposed to every dollar of a claim. We strongly recommend real liability limits plus uninsured-motorist coverage in both states.

What a motorcycle policy covers

A bike policy is built from the same core parts as auto insurance, plus a few coverages unique to motorcycles — the ones that protect your aftermarket exhaust, saddlebags, chrome, and riding gear.

What affects your premium

Engine size, your riding history, where you park the bike, and how many months a year you ride all move the price. Washington's riding season is shorter, and many carriers let Northwest riders drop to a “laid-up” comprehensive-only rate over winter to save money without dropping theft and fire protection. Florida's year-round riding and hurricane exposure push comprehensive rates up, but a completed MSF safety course earns a discount in both states.

Illustrative weighting; every carrier's model differs. Completing an MSF course and garaging your bike lowers several factors at once.

How riders save with Maru

Because we're independent, we can move you to whichever carrier rewards your profile — bundling the bike with your home or auto for a multi-policy discount, applying safety-course and mature-rider credits, and setting seasonal lay-up billing for Washington winters. We'll also make sure your custom-parts limit actually matches what you've spent, so a total loss doesn't leave you writing a check for the upgrades.

Frequently asked questions

Is motorcycle insurance required in Washington and Florida?
Washington requires liability coverage (25/50/10) to register and ride. Florida does not mandate bodily-injury liability specifically for motorcycles, but you must be able to prove financial responsibility and you're personally liable for any harm you cause — so real coverage is strongly recommended.
Does my policy cover a passenger?
Your liability coverage generally extends to guest passengers you injure, but your own medical costs depend on medical-payments or PIP coverage. We'll confirm passenger protection is built into your quote, especially if you ride two-up often.
Can I pause coverage over the winter in Washington?
Often yes. Many carriers offer a seasonal ‘lay-up’ option that keeps comprehensive coverage (theft, fire, weather) active while suspending the pricier liability and collision portions during months you don't ride. It keeps you protected in the garage while trimming premium.
Will my aftermarket parts be covered?
Only up to your custom parts and equipment (CPE) limit, which is low by default — often $1,000–$3,000. If you've added exhaust, bags, or chrome worth more, we'll schedule a higher CPE limit so a claim reflects what you actually invested.
